Over 85 Holiday Travel Insurance with medical conditions

Over 85 travel insurance can often be more difficult to find than standard travel insurance. Many travel insurance companies may not be prepared to offer older people travel insurance due to any pre-existing medical conditions that they may have and increased risk of illness whilst travelling.
Insure Direct and our providers believe that everyone deserves the right to travel with peace of mind, safe in the knowledge that they are properly insured - no matter what age they are!

Why do I need over 85 travel insurance?

If you are over the age of 85, you may be planning trips to places you’ve always wanted to go but did not have the time to travel to in the past. When planning your trips you should always make sure you have a fully comprehensive travel insurance policy.
Accidents can happen to anyone, no matter what age you are. It is important that you are properly insured in case of any accident so that you can have peace of mind and enjoy your holiday experience.
Medical costs can vary from one country to another and can sometimes be very expensive, especially in countries such as the USA. To prevent the possibility of picking up a hospital bill amounting to several thousands of pounds, you should get a travel insurance policy that can help you cover any unexpected expenses which may arise.
Through our providers, Insure Direct offers single trip and annual multi-trip policies with no age limits.

What if I am over 85 and have a medical condition?

Insure Direct and our range of providers understand the difficulties associated with finding appropriate travel insurance cover if you are over 85 and/or have a pre-existing medical condition. This is why our specialist providers offer travel insurance policies that actually meet your needs.
When you go through the online medical screening process, you will be asked a series of questions where you will be able to add any medical conditions you may have.  You will then be presented with quotations from specialist medical travel insurance providers who are able to offer you cover and you can choose the policy which best suits your particular needs.

How do I choose the best over 85s travel cover for me?

Before buying over 85 holiday insurance, there are a number of things to consider.
Firstly, you should consider which cover is most suitable. You may find that an annual policy could work out cheaper than single trip policies if you are planning two or more trips a year.
On the other hand, if you are only travelling to European countries, a policy that only offers cover to Europe may work out better value for you than a worldwide policy

Travel tips for 85+

Plan and prepare

Start by getting your documentation in order. Get your passport renewed if needed. Some countries will not give you a visa if you have only 6 months of validity left on your passport. It is also a good idea to check the visa regulations of the destination country.
When your documents are in order, do not forget to make copies. Keep one at home and one with you in case the originals are lost.
Your baggage should be the next item on the checklist. Learn about the weather conditions of the place you are travelling to and pack accordingly.
Make sure that you carry a medical kit which contains all of your required medicine along with band aids, antacids and painkillers.

See your doctor

Visit your GP well in advance of your trip. When visiting certain countries you may require vaccinations which could affect your prescribed medication. Your GP will advise you accordingly and confirm whether you are fit to travel. If you need to carry medication in large quantities, you may also need a prescription or a letter from your doctor to get it through customs.

Get to know your destination

If you need airport assistance, it is possible to arrange this in advance. Take the time to understand what travelling options are available to you and which would suit you the best.

Plan your finances

Let your bank and phone companies know that you will be travelling outside of your country. This way, you won’t risk any of your services being cancelled or stopped.

Air travel tips

If you will be confined to your airplane seat for a couple of hours, it would be a good idea to do a 10 minute workout before boarding: A brisk walk will do just fine in getting the circulation going. Also, in flight, drink plenty of water and get up to stretch out those legs.

Keeping safe whilst travelling

Whilst in transit, it is advisable to have your cash and cards in a purse or bag that you carry with you at all times.
It is never prudent to wear expensive jewellery, watches or carry high end electronic gadgets when travelling to unknown destinations. Regardless of where you are going, try not to travel alone at night as seniors can often be perceived as easy targets.
